Darren Fletcher has accused his own team-mate of diving in West Bromwich Albion’s defeat by Swansea.Callum McManaman sparked controversy when he went down in the box under a challenge from Leon Britton late in the game.
The West Brom midfielder then clashed with Angel Rangel, shoving the defender and the pair gently butting foreheads as they took ‘Boxing Day’ a little too literally.
The pair escaped with yellow cards, but Fletcher admitted afterwards that he felt his team-mate had thrown himself down in an attempt to win a penalty.‘I think Cal's made the most of it and that's why it's not given. I think everyone can see that, he throws himself,’ Fletcher said.
'I think sometimes [if you make] an unnatural movement you don't get it. Maybe if he tried to stay on his feet, take the hit, and go down he might get a penalty but when you throw yourself like that you're not going to get them and that's another one of those frustrating ones.’ West Brom manager Tony Pulis defended his player and insisted it should’ve been a spot kick. He complained that refereeing decisions are going against his side — they were also denied a penalty when Chris Brunt appeared to be fouled in the box —as they are slowly dragged towards the relegation zone.
