Al-Qaeda training camps are popping up in Afghanistan sparking fears of attacks on the United States. In October, US and Afghan troops attacked one of the terror group's training camps in southern Afghanistan, which US Army Gen. John F. Campbell said was 'probably the largest training camp-type facility' seen in 14 years of war.
He also admitted the camp - spreading across 30 square miles in Kandahar Province and used by an offshoot of the terror group called Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent - was not in a place you would expect to find Al-Qaeda.
However, the camps that have emerged are not as big as those built by Osama bin Laden before the 9/11 attacks in the US.But the Pentagon and American intelligence agencies have had to access whether they could be a breeding ground for Western attacks, theNew York Timesreports. Michael Morell, who was the deputy director of the CIA until two years ago, told the New York Times that he worries about the resurgence of Al-Qaeda in the country because the group will be targeting the US.He added: 'It is why we need to worry about the resurgence of the Taliban, because, just like before, the Taliban will give Al-Qaeda a safe haven.'Senior administration officials told the paper there are other camps or bases run by the terror group, including at least one in Helmand Province.General Campbell told Congress in October that Afghan security forces 'have have thus far proven unable to eradicate Al Qaeda entirely'.'Al Qaeda has attempted to rebuild its support networks and planning capabilities with the intention of reconstituting its strike capabilities against the US homeland and Western interests,' he said.In November, Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri called for a new wave of 9/11 strikes on America. The terror chief, who was a close advisor of Osama Bin Laden, released the 16-minute propaganda message on the internet where it was spread by social media by armchair jihadists. In the message, al-Zawahiri ordered his followers to attack 'the West'.
